Dread Extensions?

I currently have dreadlocks, and started them naturally, with no waxes, backcombing, etc. I'm considering putting in dread extensions to make my hair longer and fuller, but have one question.... Do synth dreadlocks and dread extenders knot mature like human-hair dreadlocks do? I know that when people create synth locks they usually backcomb, twist, and seal them.... after this is done, and the synth dreads are worn, over time do they get more knotty and tangly?

Thanks so much for any info you can give me!

i like having real hair extensions on my own dreads, that became shorter than my loose hair, and synth hair for temporary extensions. the real hair extensions have tightened up just like my own hair dreads but i think that can depend on which method you use(a new method i am now using only tightens up and doesn't loose any length).
    hope that helps,

hmm...i have never had real dreads, but i wear loose human hair extensions, and they tend to start to kind of lock up if i dont brush them out often enough.
i would think human hair would have more of a tendency to dread up naturally than synthetic dreads.

I play with mine as if they were real dreads, rolling them and twisting them. they have so far tightened up, instead of loosened. I do have to tighten them back to my head every so often, but I'm so thrilled with how they are holding up, that I never want to give them up, unless I do real dreads some day.
twist them between your fingers, this will help them tangle just that much more, and dry them with a hair dryer after you wash them.

hi whiskey. how do you attach the real hair extensions to your dreads? do you backcomb and twist the hair in, and is it permanent? thanks :)

too bad we don't live in the same area. I have this neato method of adding on to real dreads with human hair extentions that I perfected on my friend's dreadhawk. he went from a few inches to waist length in one day heheh. they loc up and you couldn't tell they weren't his own. best part of all, they are completely permanent. it does take about a week or so of agitation in the shower to get them to loc up nicely, and the more dye/bleach frying the better
since I can't commit to dreads on my own hair I'm going to use this method on a human hair wig soon, it's my next hair project. it's gonna be waist length horizontal stripes of different shades of blue/turquoise

as for synth ones added to real dreads, they look good at first but then as they grow out they don't look so good and depending on how the person attaches them they can be really difficult to remove without losing some of the real

hey liza. i know this is a really old post, but i was wanting to learn more about your method of adding on to real dreads with human hair. how do you do it? i have short (3-5") hair that Im in the process of dreading, its been in a few weeks and is locing up good so far but its so short and i'm impatient! I've heard that there are ways to dread human hair into your own so that is permanent, is that what you do? you can message me here or email me at earthymamawitch@hotmail.com with more info. thanks!!!!

    Thanks for all the replies.....
While I love the idea of long dreads that look like the real thing without having to wait for my short locks to grow, i had a couple months since I started this post to think about it.....

My locks have gotten much, much shorter due to tightening and shrinkage. But I can honestly say I think i'm gonna leave them the way they are. I started them natural, and I guess that's how I'll keep them for the time being. I'm just too worried that the synth hair wont blend well with my natural locks :-(

I am one of those people who changes their mind frequently, though.... so i'm sure i'll be back with other synth questions in no time!

Annie whatever your using on your hair is causing snakes to Grow out your dreads hahahhaha I just looked through your pictures...

I just had my syn dread extentions removed ..Alin of Dollylocks www.dollylocks.com switched them out with real hair extentions and then dreaded them what differance you can not tell where my real dreads stop and the extentions start...I loved the syns but they dont compare to real hair..Much lighter and much more natrual looking

Just had to reply to your post..... your comment about the snakes growing out of my head was too much! For some reason my ball python "Diamond" loves weaving and winding her way through my locks. It's her favorite place to go when I hold her, and she'll stay sitting there among them literally for hours!

You said you had your synth extensions removed, and had human hair dread extensions put in..... Well, I took the plunge too! I didnt want to go with synth because I had reservations about it looking different from my real locks. I was so frustrated with all my "devil's horns" all over my head though. I couldnt do anything to tame them, couldnt tie them back or anything. I put human hair dread extensions in myself, and couldnt be more pleased!

Glad that you are happy with yours too! Keep me posted about how yours do. I'm sure that the human hair will lock up great, but I love to hear about everyone's progress! :-)
