Unwindy Transition Dreads

Anyone have any advice on how I might go about keeping KK transition dreads from unwinding? I can't find a good method to keep the tips from coming off the bottom color and getting bunchy and yucky and looking like disgruntled harlequin dreads.

Does this make any sense?

Suggestions?
